PICTURES OF EKPO MASQUERADE FROM AKWA IBOM STATE

26 Jun
For those of us that have not seen ekpo masquerade before or perhaps haven’t seen one in a longtime, here are pictures of Ekpo masquerade all the way from Akwa Ibom State. Meanwhile, during the pre-colonial era, Akwa Ibom people used traditional cultural institutions such as Ekpo and Ekpe to maintain order in the society. These institutions stood out as government of the time. Ekpo is founded on the belief in life after death, and is regarded as the soul or ghosts of ancestors that return to the land of the living in masquerade form to participate with their kinsmen in communal festivals such as farming and rite of passage. In Akwa Ibom, we have may masquerades like Ekpo, Ekpe, Utuekpe, Ekpri Akata, Atat, Obon, Ntok Odio-Odio, Ekoong, Eka Ekpo, Akpan Ekpo, Okpo Record, Afai Ekpo, Nnabo, etc
